Why visit Gunnuhver?
Gunnuhver is a landscape of mud pools, steam vents, and altered ground near the peninsula’s southwestern tip. The textures are as expressive as the colours: bubbling surfaces, pale silica, and vapour moving across the lava.
The site’s name carries the story of Gunna, a local ghost said to have been drawn into the spring. It is a memorable example of how Reykjanes joins geology and folklore in the same frame.
Walking and accessibility
Visit Reykjanes describes the constructed walking and viewing platforms as accessible to all. The English guide describes ramps overlooking the geothermal area. Use the designated platforms; this rating does not cover walking on the surrounding geothermal ground. Check site notices because access can change.
